Traditional Hierarchy of Evidence, High to Low

The following list reflects strength of evidence from the biomedical literature. It is listed with the highest degree of evidence supplied first. As a refresher, visit the Centre for Evidence Based Medicine link below for a description of each.

Systematic Reviews or Meta-analyses
Randomized Controlled Trials
Cohort Studies
Case-Control Studies
Cross-Sectional Studies
Case Reports or Case Series

This hierarchy is useful when limiting information to be reviewed.

Where to Find the Evidence at UMDNJ

Controlled clinical trials, especially randomized controlled trials, are the basis for much of the best evidence. Not every clinical trial provides high quality information that will assist in clinical decision-making. For that reason, it is important to start with resources that have a reputation for pulling together the highest quality, most relevant, information. These resources also provide evaluations of the research studies, synthesizing the findings for users.

If no systematic review, meta-analysis, or other synopsis is available consult Critically Appraised Research Studies.

Lastly, look for Raw Evidence when there are no synopses of evidence or critically-appraised research studies available on a subject.
