When you use many of our licensed UMDNJ library resources from your home, office or other non-UMDNJ site, you will need a UMDNJ CORE / Central Authentication Service (CAS) account or a UMDNJ libraries remote access account to be able to access these sites and/or retrieve full-text material from them.
CORE accounts are used to log in to many UMDNJ systems such as the computer labs and the University's wireless network. Core accounts are in accordance with HIPPA security requirements to enhance computer security.
A UMDNJ libraries remote access account is created when you register as a UMDNJ library patron. If you have a UMDNJ libraries barcode on your ID card, you are probably already registered and need do nothing further. If you are not already a registered UMDNJ library patron, read the section below on eligibility to be certain you qualify for an account.
• Note to SHRP Distance Learning students: All SHRP Distance Learning students are registered as UMDNJ library patrons and need do nothing further. A remote access account has been created for you. To continue, see the section below "I'm a registered UMDNJ libraries patron. What next?"
UMDNJ students, faculty, staff, or other affiliated individuals wishing to access licensed UMDNJ library resources from a non-UMDNJ location. Examples would be those at home using an Internet connection through a commercial Internet Service Provider (ISP), or those on a non-UMDNJ network connection, such as a UMDNJ staff member working within a building on the Rutgers network. If you qualify under these guidelines, but you don't have a CORE account, visit your local UMDNJ campus library to register as a library patron.
You may access electronic resources by using the same CORE account/CAS log in you use for email and my.UMDNJ, etc. Accounts are set up as an Active Directory authentication for all students, staff and faculty of the university in accordance with HIPPA requirements to enhance computer security. You can verify your CORE account access by going to https://accessumd.umdnj.edu/ for CORE or My.UMDNJ for Central Authentication Service. When you change your password in My.UMDNJ, your CORE account is synchronized to it, and the same username/password is then used for both.
For questions about your CORE account please call the IST Help Desk at (732) 743-3200 or 3-3200 if you are calling from within a UMDNJ building.
When you register as a UMDNJ library patron, a remote access account is automatically created for you. This account consists of a username and a password. Your username is your last name. For UMDNJ students, faculty, and staff, your password is the last four digits of your UMDNJ ID Number. For affiliated individuals, your password is the last four digits of your patron barcode.
If you have a compound name with or without hyphens: Drop the hyphen and leave a space. Sherry Smith-Jones becomes smith jones. Roberta Bronson Fitzpatrick becomes bronson fitzpatrick.
If your last name includes an apostrophe: Drop the apostrophe and leave no space. Mark O'Rourke becomes orourke.
The other essential point to be aware of is that you MUST link to our online resources from a UMDNJ library web site. If you have bookmarked links directly to a vendor you may need to re-bookmark the journal or database site through one of the UMDNJ library links or may may not work later. Again, this applies only for off-site access.
The easiest place to start is the UMDNJ libraries home page and select either Catalogs/Databases or Full-text Resources. You can also begin from any of the campus library websites:
UMDNJ Libraries provides online access to a number of commercial and private resources. These resources, which include databases, and electronic journals and books, are not available free to the general public, so access is restricted to computers on the UMDNJ network. This is referred to as domain restriction. When your computer is physically located on campus and connected to the UMDNJ networkl, access to library resources is handled automatically. On the other hand, if your connection is made from another network or a commercial ISP, you need to make it appear as though you are on the UMDNJ network. To accomplish this, you'll need to use our EZProxy remote access service. After you have logged on with us, you will be identified on the Internet as a legitimate UMDNJ user, with access to all restricted library resources. This lasts until you close your browser. When you re-open your browser, you will need to login again for another session.
