INTRODUCTION

The records of the Seton Hall College of Medicine and Dentistry date from 1946 to 1965. The collection totals approximately 4.5 linear feet. They form Record Group A in the Bergen University Archives. The records are open for research without restrictions under the conditions of the Archives' access policy.

ORGANIZATIONAL HISTORY

Seton Hall in Jersey City The state of New Jersey had no facilities for medical and dental education until 1954 when the SHCMD was established under the auspices of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark. The College was incorporated on August 6, 1954 as a legal entity separate from Seton Hall University, but with an interlocking Board of Trustees. In September 1955 remodeling construction was begun in two buildings of the Jersey City Medical Center to house the clinical and teaching facilities of the College. The first class of 80 students was admitted to the four-year MD program in September 1956. From the first graduating class in 1960 through 1964, the College awarded the MD degree to a total of 348 individuals. There were 36 dental graduates in the first class of 1960. By 1963, the total reached 139. The College expanded its program in 1961 when the Graduate School of Biomedical Science was chartered by the State Board of Education. The first candidates for the M.S. and Ph. D. degree entered in 1962.

Early in 1961 it became apparent that the Archdiocese of Newark, could not support the College's growing financial deficit that threatened to force the institution's closure. In April 1964, Governor Richard J. Hughes, with leaders of the Senate and General Assembly, appointed a fact-finding committee to determine the feasibility of the State taking over and operating the SHCMD. On July 28, 1964, the committee recommended that the State purchase the assets of the SHCMD for $4 million and continue its operation under state control. The action was consummated on May 3, 1965, and the institution's name was officially changed to the New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry (NJCMD).

PROVENANCE

The records of the SHCMD were photocopied with the approval of Archivist Peter Wosh and Monsignor William Field of Seton Hall University, and given to the UMDNJ University Archives in 1980; other materials are in original format.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The SHCMD records span the years 1946-1965. The bulk of the material dates from Seton Hall's introduction to medical education, its post World War II post-graduate program co-sponsored by the Essex County Medical Society to its takeover by the State in 1965.

The UMDNJ Archives hold the official papers of James E. McCormack, M. D. McCormack was the first President of the NJCMD, and served as Dean of SHCMD from 1960-1964. Researchers may wish to check in record group RG/B -NJCMD for additional documentation. Researchers should note that Series 4 Photographs are cross referenced with RG/B-3-A.

Researchers will note that the documents contained in the series are, for the most part, photocopies of originals held in the Seton Hall University Archives.

SERIES DESCRIPTION

SERIES I. COLLEGE PUBLICATIONS, 1946-1965, Arranged alphabetically, 6 linear inches.

This series consists of various in-house publications from SHCMD. Folder contents are arranged chronologically. Researchers should note that the Bulletin of Information (course catalogs) for the Seton Hall College of Medicine and the Seton Hall College of Dentistry, for the years 1956-1965, will be located in the New Jersey Medical School (RG/D) Series 1 Box 1 and the New Jersey Dental School (RG/E) Series 1 Box 1, respectively.

SERIES II. BOARD OF TRUSTEES, 1954-1965, w/ gaps, Arranged chronologically, 6 linear inches.

This series contains the minutes of the meetings of the SHCMD Board of Trustees. This series also contains a list of members and the selection criteria. The Board was designed to interlock with the Board of Trustees of Seton Hall University.

SERIES III. OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT, 1954-1965, Arranged by subseries, 2.5 linear feet.

This series contains material documenting the establishment of New Jersey's first medical and dental school; fundraising activities of the Founders Fund Committee; financial affairs and budget allocations; accreditation and State approval of the College; and the development of a graduate school in the bio-medical sciences. The records contain extensive material on the lease and affiliation agreements with the Jersey City Medical Center, as well as the relationship between the Jersey City municipal government and the SHCMD. Also included is correspondence with State officials regarding the State takeover of SHCMD. The records consist of correspondence, reports, minutes of meetings, by-laws, rules and regulations. The series is arranged into seven subseries with their contents arranged in alphabetical order.

SERIES IV. PHOTOGRAPHS, pre-1965, Arranged according to floor.

This series contains photographs of the SHCMD's facilities at the Jersey City Medical Center and a portrait of Monsignor John Dougherty, 13th President of Seton Hall University. The photographs were transferred to the Archives with the records of the NJCMD. They are cross-referenced with RG/B-3-A, Box 5 folders 14 and 24. They have been placed in the SHCMD collection because they appear to date from before the State takeover in May 1965. The photographs of facilities are arranged according to floor.

SERIES V. SCRAPBOOKS, 1954-1964., Arranged chronologically, 8 linear inches.

This series is composed of seven scrapbooks arranged in chronological order. The books contain newspaper clippings that are dated and the origin identified. Scrapbook number four contains a brochure entitled "Progress in Health." Number five contains a letter from President Dwight D. Eisenhower dated February 28, 1957. The books deal mainly with fundraising activities and the debate over the 1954 State bond issue for a State sponsored medical school. Scrapbook number seven (accession no. 95-05) is a later addition to the series. Compiled by Joan A. Williams, it documents the firing of Kenneth Judy, MD from SHCMD, and the politics surrounding the takeover of SHCMD by the state of New Jersey.

SERIES VI. EXTERNAL FINANCIAL RESOURCES, 1954-1965, Arranged by subseries, 3 linear inches.

This series contains information about the external financial resources of the SHCMD. It is composed of three subseries. Subseries are arranged in chronological order and consist of materials dealing with various fund raising activities of the SHCMD. The material was donated by Monsignor William Field of Seton Hall University, who headed the fund raising campaigns for SHCMD. For further information see Mnsgr. William Field's Oral History Interview.

The subseries are:

SUBSERIES A. Correspondence and Memorandum, 1960-1962.
This subseries consists of correspondence from Mnsgr. Field on his work with the Development Office to raise money for the SHCMD.

SUBSERIES B. Founder's Fund, 1959-1961.
This subseries contains lists of contributions and pledges to the Founder's Fund of the SHCMD, a fund-raising entity.

SUBSERIES C. Women's Guild of SHCMD, 1956-1965.
This subseries contains material on the Women's Guild. The Guild was founded to raise money for the SHCMD. The types of material contained in the subseries are by-laws and programs from numerous fundraisers.

SERIES VII. A HISTORY OF SHCMD, 1947-1963, Arranged chronologically, 2 linear inches.

This series is composed of correspondence and narratives compiled by Bessie Griggs, secretary to James McCormack. Ms. Griggs compiled the material as part of a history of the SHCMD from 1947-1963. The material provides some interesting personal insights into the early history of the school.
