Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of only one scrapbook, which was acquired from the Academy of Medicine of New Jersey by the George F. Smith Library of the Health Sciences. It was transferred to the University Libraries Special Collections by the Technical Services Department in July 1982. Dr. Thomas Harvey, Sr. (1853-1938), was the founder and first chairman of the Welfare Committee of the Medical Society of New Jersey and the scrapbook documents his work from 1919-1921. Dr. Harvey was a graduate of the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York in 1878. A cover letter from Dr. Thomas Harvey, Jr. is attached.
Series Description
Series A: Scrapbook
A scrapbook kept by Dr. Harvey chronicling his efforts as the first chairman of the Welfare Committee of the Medical Society of New Jersey. The scrapbook dates from 1919-1921.
Contents include resolutions, correspondence, memoranda, telegrams, newspaper clippings and legislative acts. Subjects covered include opposition to the establishment of a State Medical Board for Chiropractors independent of the State Medical Board and a Board for Drugless Therapeutics, a resolution outlining the need for a welfare committee and its functions, a list of health laws enacted by the State Legislature in 1921, and opposition to two bills, one dealing with the establishment of Compulsory Health Insurance and the other with anti-vaccination.
