INTRODUCTION

The papers of Francis P. Chinard, M.D. date from 1962 to 1997, but consist mainly of documents from 1970 to 1990. The collection totals approximately 4.5 linear feet. They form Faculty Collection 10 in the University Libraries' Special Collections. The papers are open for research with minimal restrictions under the conditions of the Archive's access policy.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Francis Pierre Chinard was born June 30, 1918, in Berkeley, California. He attended Johns Hopkins University from 1934 to 1936 and received his A. B. degree from University of California, Berkeley in 1937. Dr. Chinard received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1941. Following his education, Dr. Chinard started a post-graduate internship at Presbyterian Hospital in New York. However, the internship was interrupted in July 1942, when he began three years of Air Force service (until December 1945). Stationed in England, he received the Legion of Merit in 1944. Chinard married Josephine L. Wise; they had three children: Suzanne F., Jeanne M., and Marc F.

Throughout his professional life, Dr. Chinard received numerous academic and hospital appointments. He taught and worked in Maryland, Montreal, New York, and New Jersey. Dr. Chinard began his career at UMDNJ in 1968 as a Professor of Medicine and Chair of the Department of Medicine. He was the Director of Medical Service at Martland Hospital from 1970-1971. While at NJMS, Dr. Chinard was a Professor of Experimental Medicine (1975-1977), Research Medicine (1977-1996), and Physiology (1977-1996). He became a Distinguished Professor in 1989, and retired a Professor Emeritus from UMDNJ in 1996.

His time at UMDNJ was filled with major administrative, clinical, and hospital responsibilities. He was a Firm Chief, an Attending Physician at University Hospital, and a member and chair of numerous university-wide committees and national organizations. In addition to his active service at UMDNJ, Dr. Chinard authored over 120 publications and served on a number of editorial boards. Among his awards are: the Eugene Landis Award of the Microcirculatory Society (1978) and the Osler Humanitarian Award from the New Jersey Thoracic Society (1991).

PROVENANCE

Dr. Francis P. Chinard, himself, donated his papers to the UMDNJ Special Collections Department. The Deed of Gift dates January 2, 1991.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Francis P. Chinard papers date from 1962 to 1997. The majority of the material, however, dates from 1970 to 1990. The collection documents the professional life and activities of Dr. Francis Pierre Chinard. The papers represent Dr. Chinard's career, while at UMDNJ, and his involvement with national and international medical institutions and organizations.

Time periods best represented in the collections are the mid-1970s to the late 1980s. The years most sparsely documented are the early 1960s and the 1990s.

The records are grouped into 3 series: ALPHABETICAL CORRESPONDENCE, CHRONOLOGICAL CORRESPONDENCE, and SUBJECT FILES, which are arranged alphabetically. These are the three original groupings created by Chinard. All the file names are labeled as received; most of the material is dated. The arrangment of individual documents under Dr. Chinard's original filing has not changed. As a result, many items within the folders are not in chronological order.

The collection contains textual files and one computer diskette. The majority of the documents are typewritten paper records, although handwritten notes and printed materials are included in the collection.

Document types contained in the collection include: letters, memos, reprints, reports, minutes, speeches, assorted flyers and brochures, and newspaper clippings. Correspondence composes the majority of the collection.

SERIES DESCRIPTION

SERIES I. ALPHABETICAL CORRESPONDENCE, 1962-1984, w/ gaps. Arranged alphabetically.

This series consists of the correspondence of Francis Chinard. It contains handwritten and typed papers, signed and unsigned. This series documents the beginning period of Dr. Chinard's work at UMDNJ, and his time as the Chair of the Dept. of Medicine.

SERIES II. CHRONOLOGICAL CORRESPONDENCE, 1975-1990, w/ gaps. Arranged chronologically.

This series consists of letters, mostly outgoing, and some correspondence by Francis Chinard. It contains handwritten and typed papers, signed and unsigned. This series documents the period when Dr. Chinard was Professor of Experimental Medicine, Research Medicine, and Physiology at NJMS. It also reflects his appointment as a consultant at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center, Paterson and at the Montreal General Hospital, Quebec, Canada.

SERIES III. SUBJECT FILES, 1968-1997, w/ gaps. Arranged alphabetically.

This series contains memorandums, reports, some correspondence, minutes, reprints, curriculum vitae, newspaper clippings, and other miscellaneous documents. There are original and photocopied materials, as well as faxes and carbon copies. This series documents all aspects of Dr. Chinard's academic, hospital, and administrative appointments while at UMDNJ. Please refer to the following container list.

ADDENDUM

SERIES IV. COMMITTEE ON CONDUCT OF RESEARCH, 1988-1997, n. d., w/ gaps.

This series documents Dr. Chinard's work with the University Committee on Conduct of Research (CCR) at UMDNJ from 1990 to 1997, although some records predate 1990. Chinard chaired the Committee from 1993 to 1996. The Committee was established to revise and implement the University's policy of scientific misconduct and fraud, in compliance with federal regulations. The Committee also developed official University guidelines pertaining to ethics and misconduct in scientific research, and conducted inquiries and formal investigations of alleged misconduct. Three Campus Committees, Newark, Piscataway/New Brunswick, and Camden/Stratford, reported to the University Committee. University Committee members initially included: Ms. Celia Abalos, Dr. Edward T. Browning (Chairperson), Ms. Julie Kligerman, Dr. David Price, Dr. Karen Putterman, Dr. Asha Samant, Dr. Stephen Schwartz, Dr. Theresa Scholl, Ms. Mary Shean, Dr. Norman Sissman, and Dr. Lester Sultatos. Members served terms of two or three years.

This series contains handwritten and typed letters, memos, minutes, member lists, reports, course materials, articles, clippings, and reprints. There are original, photocopied, and faxed materials. Documents have been kept in their original order, with minimal reorganization. The majority of records are in chronological order within the folders., although some folders overlap. Most of the series is open access. However, folders 17, 18, and 19 in box 6 contain confidential information, and have been placed under RESTRICTED ACCESS for a period of ten years.
