A.W.A.R.E. History
In March of 1972 Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was extended for the first time to prohibit discrimination against employees of educational institutions. In the same year Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibited discrimination on the basis of sex at institutions receiving Federal money. In addition to laws passed by Congress, Federal regulations prohibited discrimination on the basis of sex. These regulations were attuned to the philosophy that merely to stop former patterns of discrimination was not enough. Instead, "affirmative action" must be taken by means of recruitment, employment, and promotions of groups who were formerly excluded.
In response to the legal and regulatory environment, President Stanley Bergen of CMDNJ appointed, in March 1972, the Committee on the Current Status of Women. The committee was to report to him on any inequities at CMDNJ. The committee submitted a report in March of 1973, and one of the majority's recommendations was that a permanent committee be formed. A year later, the Ad Hoc Committee on the Status of Women was formed to dissent from the College's affirmative action plan of that period.
By June of 1974 Paul Lyons, President of Equal Employment Opportunity Services of Washington D.C., had been hired as a consultant by the College administration in order to aid in the production of an affirmative action plan. Reporting to Vice President for Human Resources Herbert M. Croce, Lyons produced several drafts of a plan. It was not until June of 1975 before a final draft, acceptable to all groups, could be produced.
In the mean time, the recommendation for a permanent women's committee had been implemented in December of 1974. A committee on women at NJMS and Martland Hospital was set up. Separate committees were formed for the New Jersey Dental School and Rutgers Medical School. The committee at NJMS-MH had several precursors, including the Committee on the Current Status of Women, the Ad Hoc Committee on the Status of Women, the Pro Tempore Committee on the Status of Women, and the Steering Committee on Women.
After it was elected in December of 1974, the committee named itself the Alliance for Women's Advancement, Rights, and Equality (A.W.A.R.E.). In January 1975 the constitution and by-laws of this group were finalized, and the chair, Diane Redd, resigned. She was replaced by May Hollinshead, a professor in the Anatomy Department.
A.W.A.R.E. met generally on a bi-weekly basis and concerned itself with the drafts of the affirmative action plan, as well as topics such as finance, public relations, a grant proposal, grievances, and day care. A lobbying effort to remove inequities in the New Jersey Public Employees Retirement System (P.E.R.S.), which required women to pay more than men for the same pension benefits, was successful.
However, by the early spring of 1977, apathy had apparently struck many A.W.A.R.E. members, since meetings were ill attended. Some members continued to have a strong interest in women's rights, but the group itself finally was disbanded.
Scope and Content Note
The records of A.W.A.R.E. cover the period from 1972 to 1981, although most of the material dates from the period 1974-1977. Also included in the collection are papers pertaining to Committee W of the American Association of University Professors (A.A.U.P.) This latter material deals with women's issues and dates from the period 1975-1977.
The collection represents records maintained by three separate individuals, and has been arranged to reflect this fact. The first sub series of the collection consists of the papers of Anita Roberts, an A.W.A.R.E. officer. The second sub series refers to records of Diane Redd's tenure as chair of the A.W.A.R.E. committee. The third and most extensive sub series is comprised of papers maintained by May Hollinshead.
Included among the document types in the collection are correspondence, reports, agendas and minutes of meetings (the minutes appear to represent a complete or nearly complete series), newsletters, speeches, constitutions and by-laws, article reprints, newspaper clippings, state Assembly bills, and affirmative action plans and drafts of plans.
The Anita Roberts papers were donated by her to the Archives August 2, 1982, and have the accession number 82-86. The Diane Redd and May Hollinshead material was donated by them to the Archives April 9, 1984, and has the accession number 84-07.
An oral history interview Dr. Hollinshead is available in the repository.
Two linear feet of material comprise the collection.
