Installing EndNote:

In Windows EndNote is downloaded as a zipped or compressed file and needs to be extracted before installing. Two files are extracted, the "ENX5Inst" file and the "License" file.  Both of these files must be located in same directory or folder for EndNote to install correctly.   IF YOU ARE ASKED TO ENTER A "PRODUCT KEY" DURING INSTALLATION BOTH FILES ARE NOT IN THE SAME FOLDER. You WILL NOT be asked to enter a "product key" if both file are in the same folder or directory. [Additional Information pdf]

APA 6th Edition output style is now included in the latest EndNote download for Windows.  For earlier Windows versions of EndNote run EndNote Program updates available under the Help drop down menu within the EndNote program to install the APA 6th edition output style.   Some Windows users may have to install APA 6th Edition output style manually.

Windows 7, Vista, and XP Users: Note, there are known Windows Vista Compatibility Issues as indicated at http://www.endnote.com/envista.asp. Please check this web page for detailed information regarding Vista.
  1. Right click on the "endnoteX5.zip" folder.
  2. Select "Extract All" from the list of options.
  3. Click "Next" and accept the default location"
  4. Files will extract to a new folder named "EndNoteX5"
  5. Open folder EndNoteX5, and the other folder within, make sure both files are there.
  6. Click "ENX5Inst" to begin installation.
  7. Except default settings and select typical installation
  8. After EndNote installation is complete, run "EndNote Program Updates" from the EndNote Help Menu to check for updates. (Optional)

Mac Users: Download and save the install file to your MAC. (Note that only Intel based Macintosh computers are compatible with EndNote X5. See System and Hardware Requirements)

  1. Once downloaded click on the installer.dmg file and a new window will open. This window is VOLUME & SITE LICENSE UNLOCKED INSTALLER. Drag the EndNote X4 folder on screen from left to right and into Applications as seen on screen. The instruction on screen directs you to the EndNote X5 folder, now in the Applications directory.
  2. Proceed to Applications via the Finder; open the EndNote X5 folder and click the EndNote Icon to launch the EndNote Customizer. The EndNote Customizer will install the program to completion; you should click on the "Next" button three times, when prompted.
  3. Download and install the optional, but recommended UMDNJ Filter package. (NOTE: Without these filters you may not be able to import references from some UMDNJ databases, such as the OvidSP databases, into EndNote. Also, there are limitations to the Safari browser for MACs. Read the UL EndNote Blog entry for more information.)
